Kate Chopin lived a hard 54 years and left us with a small but powerful body of literary gems. The Awakening is her finest work.
She was self-taught and this is refected in a style which is both accesible and impressive. Described as a precurser to modern feminism, I'd advise readers to ignore this fact and read this volume from the perspective of what great writing can be. Ahead of her time the theme of opression is strong within her work.
An that's exactly what great writers do they argue for humanity and if you're human you will benefit from her strength and perspective.
